Recreational Program Director

OVERVIEW:

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for a Recreational Program Director for the Parks Division within the Department of Public Works and Parks. Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Coordinator, the position is responsible for supervising, planning, organizing, directing, and implementing all seasonal recreation programs & activities; including special events, youth development, arts & crafts and other duties assigned by the Parks & Recreation Coordinator. The position will be responsible for the general safety, growth, and skills achievement of the participants in seasonal programs. This position will encourage respect for personal property, recreational equipment, and park equipment. This position will observe youth behavior, program staff, and enforce appropriate safety regulations & emergency procedures within the policies and guidelines of the City of Worcester.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

• Design and lead recreational and leisure activities to meet community needs

• Offer programs that will stimulate and sustain the interest of participants and motivate their participation that they may benefit from the physical, psychological, and social values to be derived from recreational activities

• Manage and provide leadership for all facilities and seasonal staff members if the Recreation Division

• Complete and maintain program budgets

• Interview, hire, train, and schedule seasonal employees 

• Provide overall direction, coordination, evaluation, and appraising performance, along with rewarding and enforcing division policies/regulations

• Work cooperatively with youth, adult, and other City divisions regarding special events

• Distribute program information to the community

• Address complaints and resolve problems

• Perform other duties and tasks as deemed necessary and/or assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, & Publisher

• Willingness work in a variety of weather conditions

• Ability to work independently and in a group setting

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public

• Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR/AED

• Effective decision-making and negotiation skills

• Understanding of coaching youth   

• Ability to work up to forty (40) hours per week

• Ability to perform daily routine maintenance and safety checks of recreation equipment

• Ability to maintain clean program facilities and emptying trash barrels

• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Currently enrolled in a college/university program with specializations in Recreation Management, Physical Education, or related field, OR; 

High School Diploma or GED, and two (2 years in a supervisory capacity that demonstrates directing recreation programs, intramural sports activities, or therapeutic recreation may be considered in lieu of the above requirements

• Experience with employee supervision 

• Experience in planning recreation programs for youth between 6 to 16 years of age

• Valid Driver’s License

• Must be at least 18 years of age

• Must be able to pass CORI/SORI check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• First Aid and/or CPR/AED Certification

• Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity that demonstrates directing recreation programs, intramural sport activities or therapeutic recreation

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite

• Basic administrative abilities including report writing, and Seasonal Recreation Program Budgets

SALARY: $21.00 per hour, seasonal, non-benefitted.
