The Town of West Boylston is seeking a full-time Mechanic to join the Department of Public
Works Highway Division. The position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Definition
Skilled maintenance and repair work on automotive and certain electrical and mechanical
equipment; and light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment; operates heavy
equipment and/or trucks for the department of public works; all other related work, as required.

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the DPW Foreman.
Exercises a considerable degree of independent judgment in repair methods and replacement of
parts; work assignments are checked in progress and upon completion.

Job Environment
Work is performed under typical DPW garage and yard conditions with exposure to gasoline, dust,
dirt and fumes which may be hazardous toone’s health.

Operates variousrepair equipment, including hand tools and power tools; operates heavy and light
motor vehicles and equipment.

Has occasional contact with other town departments and vendors; contacts beyond the public works
department are minimal.

Errors could result in damage to costly equipment or in failure of equipment under operating
conditions, potentially causing injury to employees.

Essential Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types

Performs regular maintenance and repair work to all public works equipment, such as, but not
limited to, loaders, graders, backhoes, trucks, heavy and light trucks, sanders, lawn mowers,
chain saws, pumps, etc; cleans and maintainsshop; drives light and heavy trucks and equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance operations; greases and oils vehicles; changestires and batteries;
does body work entailing blacksmithing or welding tasks.

Replaces brakes, wheel bearings, axle bearings, universal joints, starters, and injectors in diesel
engines; packs hydraulic cylinders.

Diagnoses defects and repairs a wide variety of DPW construction and maintenance equipment,
including gas and diesel engines, transmissions, gear cases, etc.

Charges and replaces batteries; checks electrical and heating systems; lubricates equipment;
changes oil.

Inspects all equipment and vehicles for inspection stickers.

Repairs chainsaws, weedwackers, pump hoses and other mechanical equipment; repairs and
lubricates fences and gates around buildings; repairs garage doors and security light fixtures.

Performs other duties as assigned, such as, but not limited to, brush cutting and chipping, lawn
mowing and trimming, painting, cement mixing, shoveling snow and removing ice, cleaning and
repairing sewer lines and appurtenances, water system repairs, etc.

Operates assigned heavy motor equipment in the performance of the particular tasks for which
assigned; operates equipment which includes, but is not limited to, riding lawn mowers, dump
trucks, snow plows, street sweeper, catch basin cleaner, road roller, front-end loaders, and
backhoes; operates associated power and hand tools. Performs all the duties of a Heavy Motor
Equipment Operator/Laborerasdirected.

Maintains and cleans the repair shop and garage; maintains records relative to all work done on
department of public works equipment.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency; training in mechanic and automotive repair work at
the journeyman level; three years’ experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of
varied equipment, as is characteristic of municipal operations; or any equivalent
combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Class B Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License
Class C Massachusetts Hydraulic License, Air Brake endorsement
Massachusetts Vehicle InspectionLicense
Certified Brake Inspector

Knowledge, Ability nod Skill
Knowledge.Thorough knowledgeofthetools,techniques, equipment, and procedures used
in motor equipment repair and maintenance. Knowledge of repair methods for heavy,
diesel, and electrical equipment. Knowledge of hydraulic systems. Working knowledge
of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability. Ability to operate drill press, grinder, torches, saws, and a variety of other hand tools.
Skill. Skill in all of the above tools and equipment. Skill in welding, steel fabrication, and
electrical systems.

Physical Requirements
Continuously strenuous physical effort required to perform functions under shop conditions and
various weather conditions. Frequently required to stoop, bend, squat, and kneel. Frequently
required to lift heavy objects weighing as much as 60 pounds, or more. Physical agility to work in
small and cramped spaces. Physical ability to operate heavy equipment for long periods of time
under various weather conditions. Eyesight and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.”
Requires good close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception.
